Apply for the Utilita Warm Home Discount 2025: Eligibility and Guide

The Warm Home Discount, or WHD, provides a one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill to help low-income households with energy costs during the winter.

Utilita Energy, as a compulsory participant, provides this discount, but the application process and eligibility rules are different depending on whether you live in England, Wales, or Scotland.

For most people in England and Wales, the process is now automatic, but customers in Scotland and some others still need to apply.

The scheme runs from October 2025 to March 2026. The key qualifying date for eligibility is 24 August 2025.

What are the Eligibility Groups for England and Wales?

If you live in England or Wales, the Warm Home Discount scheme is now automatic for almost all eligible customers.

You are split into one of two Core Groups, and you do not need to apply if you are in either group.

1. Core Group 1 (Pensioners)

You automatically qualify for the £150 discount if all of the following apply:

  1. You receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit on the qualifying date of 24 August 2025.
  2. Your name, or your partner’s name, was on the electricity bill with Utilita on the qualifying date.

The Department for Work and Pensions, or DWP, will use its data to identify you and will send you a letter between October and December 2025 confirming your discount.

2. Core Group 2 (Wider Low Income)

You automatically qualify for the £150 discount if all of the following apply:

  1. Your name, or your partner’s name, was on the electricity bill with Utilita on the qualifying date of 24 August 2025.
  2. You received one of the following means-tested benefits on the qualifying date:
    • Housing Benefit
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or ESA
    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or JSA
    • Income Support
    • Universal Credit
    • The Savings Credit element of Pension Credit

If you are in this group, the DWP will automatically identify you, and you will receive a letter between October and December 2025 confirming the discount.

Application Guide for Customers in Scotland (Broader Group)

The rules are different in Scotland, and if you are a low-income customer who is not receiving the Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, you usually need to apply directly to Utilita.

This is often referred to as the Broader Group.

Eligibility for the Scottish Broader Group:

Utilita’s Scottish Broader Group eligibility is based on a main benefit and a sub-element criterion. You must receive:

  1. One of the Main Benefits such as Universal Credit, Income Support, or Income-based JSA.
  2. AND One of the sub-elements, such as responsibility for a child under five living with you, or receiving the disabled child premium.

When is Utilita’s Application Window?

Utilita runs a limited application window for its Broader Group customers in Scotland.

  1. Application Period: The application window for the 2025 to 2026 scheme is typically set for a short time. Based on previous years, it has been as short as 17 to 29 October 2025, or sometimes earlier in September.
  2. How to Apply: You must visit the Utilita website or use the My Utilita app during the application period and complete the online form. You may need to provide evidence, such as a full PDF copy of your most recent Universal Credit statement or an award letter from the DWP.
  3. Selection: Due to the limited funding, not all successful applications are guaranteed payment. Utilita often uses a random selection process for applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, a process approved by the regulator, Ofgem.

What to do if you do not receive a confirmation letter

If you live in England or Wales, are eligible for Core Group 1 or 2, and have not received your confirmation letter from the DWP by early January 2026, you should take action.

  1. Contact the WHD Helpline: The DWP provides a dedicated Warm Home Discount helpline. You should call this number to check your eligibility and ask why you have not received your letter.
  2. Deadline for Contact: You must contact the helpline by 27 February 2026 to ensure you are considered for the discount before the scheme ends.

It is important that your name on your Utilita account exactly matches the name the DWP holds on its records, as any mismatch could prevent your automatic payment.

When and how will the £150 discount be paid?

The £150 discount is a one-off rebate and is not paid out in cash.

  1. Payment Deadline: The discount must be applied to your Utilita electricity account by 31 March 2026.
  2. Direct Debit/Bill Pay: If you pay your bill by Direct Debit or pay upon receipt of your bill, the £150 will be credited directly to your energy account.
  3. Prepayment Meter: If you use a prepayment meter, the £150 will be sent directly to your electricity meter as credit. If you have a smart meter, you may be able to transfer the credit to your gas meter using the My Utilita app. If you have a debt on your account, the discount may be used to pay off this debt first.
