She added that her casework team helps Kansans recover backlogged federal benefits, but families &#8220;shouldn&#8217;t have to turn to their representatives&#8217; offices just to get the benefits they&#8217;ve earned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Evans echoed that point. &#8220;When families experience the loss of a loved one, the last thing they should have to deal with is red tape and complications when accessing the benefits they are owed,&#8221; he said, calling the bill an effort to give &#8220;grieving families faster access to the resources and services they need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Who supports the bill?<\/h2>\n<p>New York Life has backed the legislation. Heather Nesle, Senior Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at New York Life, said the company supports the act because it &#8220;would enable grieving families to apply for Social Security survivor benefits online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to the New York Life Foundation&#8217;s work as the nation&#8217;s largest corporate funder of childhood bereavement causes, and thanked the two representatives &#8220;for leading the effort to help more children access the financial support they are entitled to during an incredibly difficult time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Where can I read the bill text?<\/h2>\n<p>The full legislative text of the Survivor Benefits Application Modernization Act is posted on Rep. Because the bill was only introduced, it still has to pass the House and Senate and be signed into law before any of its deadlines begin.<\/p>\n<h2>How can families protect survivor benefits from fraud right now?<\/h2>\n<p>The push to modernize comes as Social Security fraud stays in the headlines. In one recent case reported by KTAR News, the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office for the District of Arizona indicted a Tucson man, Ruffin Alford III, 48, who is alleged to have kept <strong>$104,013<\/strong> in benefits deposited into his deceased mother&#8217;s account between October 2020 and August 2025. If convicted of theft of government money, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with a court appearance set for September 25.<\/p>\n<p>Survivors can take steps now to guard their own records.
