incomes do not fall significantly behind that of the working population.

Minimum Protection: If both inflation and earnings growth are low, the State Pension is still guaranteed to increase by at least 2.5 per cent.

Because the policy uses the highest of the three figures, the increases compound over time, helping the State Pension to maintain and increase its real value.

Example of the Triple Lock Pension in Action (April 2026)

The increase due in April 2026 demonstrates how the three measures are compared.

The government will confirm the final percentage in the Autumn Budget later this month.

Triple Lock Measure

Relevant Figure (2025)

Result for April 2026 Increase

Average Earnings Growth

4.8% (May to July 2025)

Highest figure used

Inflation (CPI)

3.8% (September 2025)

Lower than Earnings

Minimum Floor

2.5%

Lower than Earnings and CPI

Since 4.8 per cent is the highest figure, the State Pension is expected to increase by this amount in April 2026.

This would raise the full New State Pension from its current rate of £230.25 per week to approximately £241.30 per week.

What the Triple Lock Pension Does Not Cover

It is important to know that while the Triple Lock applies to the core elements of the State Pension, it does not apply to all parts of a pensioner’s total income.

Additional State Pension: For those who reached State Pension age before April 2016, any money received from the Additional State Pension, also known as SERPS or the State Second Pension, is not covered by the Triple Lock. This element is instead increased each year in line with the CPI rate of inflation only.

Pension Credit and Other Benefits: Other benefits paid to pensioners, such as Pension Credit, do not always follow the Triple Lock. They are usually uprated in line with the CPI measure of inflation.

Deferred Pension Boost: If you choose to defer taking your State Pension, the extra amount you receive is generally increased each year in line with the CPI rate, not the Triple Lock.

The Triple Lock is a government policy that governs how the value of the State Pension is increased each year in the UK. It is not used to calculate the amount of your initial State Pension entitlement, which is based on your National Insurance, or NI, record. Instead, the Triple Lock is a guarantee applied […]

[4

post-202","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-state-pension
["GET
