To get it, you simply file your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return and complete the ON-BEN Application Form each year.

According to Ontario.ca, the benefit bundles three separate credits, and you need to qualify for at least one of them to receive a payment. This guide explains who is eligible, how much you can get, and when payments arrive.

What is the Ontario Trillium Benefit made up of?

The Ontario Trillium Benefit combines three credits into one payment:

Northern Ontario Energy Credit — helps with the higher home energy costs faced by residents of Northern Ontario.

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit — helps with property taxes and the sales tax paid on energy costs.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit — helps offset the sales tax Ontarians pay.

The amount is adjusted each year for inflation using the Ontario Consumer Price Index.

Who is eligible for the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

Eligibility depends on which of the three credits you qualify for. For the 2026 benefit year (July 2026 to June 2027), the rules differ slightly by credit.

Northern Ontario Energy Credit: You must be a resident of Northern Ontario (Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, or Timiskaming) on December 31, 2025. You must also be 18 or older, have or previously have had a spouse or common-law partner, or be a parent living or previously living with your child. In 2025, you must have rented or paid property tax, lived on a reserve and paid home energy costs, or lived in a public long-term care home and paid for accommodation.

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit: You must be an Ontario resident on December 31, 2025, meet one of the same age or family conditions, and in 2025 have paid property tax, rented from a landlord required to pay property tax, lived on a reserve and paid energy costs, or paid for a public long-term care home.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit: Before June 1, 2027, you must be an Ontario resident and at least 19 years old, currently or previously married or in a common-law relationship, or a parent who lives or previously lived with your child.

Your eligibility also depends on where you live on the 1st of each month. If you move out of Ontario partway through a month, you may receive that month’s payment but not later ones.

How much can I get from the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

The maximum amounts for the 2026 benefit year are set by credit:

Northern Ontario Energy Credit: up to $189 if single, or up to $290 for families.

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit: up to $1,307 if you are 18 to 64, up to $1,488 if you are 65 or older, $290 if you live on a reserve or in a public long-term care home, and $25 for time spent in a designated college, university, or private school residence in 2025.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit: up to $378, plus up to $378 more for your spouse or common-law partner and each dependent child under 19.

The Ontario Sales Tax Credit does not affect your GST/HST credit payments. Your actual amount depends on your age, income, residence, family size, and the amount you paid in rent or property tax. You can estimate your total using the CRA child and family benefits calculator on Canada.ca.

How do I apply for the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

You must apply every year by filing your personal Income Tax and Benefit Return and completing the ON-BEN Application Form included in your tax package. File your return even if you have no income to report.

The Canada Revenue Agency uses your return to determine whether you qualify and how much you will receive. The last day to file is April 30 each year. If you cannot prepare your own return, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program may be able to help.

Full details and the ON-BEN form are available through Ontario.ca at ontario.ca/page/ontario-trillium-benefit.

When is the Ontario Trillium Benefit paid?

How you receive your payment depends on the total you qualify for in the 2026 benefit year:

More than $500: choose monthly payments starting July 2026, or a single payment in June 2027. The total is the same either way.

$500 or less: a single payment in July 2026.

More than $2 but less than $10: increased to $10.

$2 or less: no payment is issued.

If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, your benefit arrives the same way. Otherwise, payments come by mail on the 10th of each month, starting in July. Filing by April 30 keeps your payments on time; filing late may delay them.

How do I set up direct deposit or query a missing payment?

You can request direct deposit through the CRA My Account service or by completing the Canada direct deposit enrolment form. For help, call the CRA at 1-800-959-8281.

Contact the CRA if you qualify but do not receive your payment by July 24 or the 24th of any following month, received less than expected, or were asked to repay a credit. You can also file a formal objection through the process set out in your Notice of Assessment or Reassessment. For general information, call the CRA at 1-877-627-6645.

One safety note: the Government of Ontario will not text or message you asking for personal details, payment, or to claim a refund.
