What Is the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB)?

The Ontario Trillium Benefit is a combined payment that includes:

  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC)
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC)
  • Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC)

Instead of paying these separately, the CRA combines them into one monthly payment called the OTB.

How OTB Payments Work

  • OTB is based on your previous year’s tax return.
  • Your 2026 payments are based on your 2025 income, which is reported on your 2024 tax return.
  • The annual amount is usually divided into 12 monthly payments.

Lump-sum payment options

You may receive your OTB as one payment instead of monthly if:

  • You chose on your 2024 tax return to wait for a lump sum and your entitlement is over $360 → Paid June 10, 2026
  • Your annual entitlement is $360 or less → Paid as a lump sum in July 2025
  • Your return was assessed after June 19, 2025 → Payments begin after assessment

Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC)

OEPTC helps with energy costs and property taxes.

You may qualify if on December 31, 2024 you:

  • Paid rent or property tax in Ontario
  • Paid long-term care accommodation costs
  • Paid home energy costs on a reserve
  • Lived in a university, college, or private school residence

OEPTC is paid as part of OTB on the monthly OTB payment dates.

Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC)

NOEC helps residents of Northern Ontario with higher energy costs.

You may qualify if you lived in Northern Ontario and paid:

  • Rent or property tax
  • Long-term care accommodation costs
  • Home energy costs on a reserve

NOEC is also paid as part of OTB.

Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC)

OSTC helps low- and moderate-income residents with sales tax costs.

  • Maximum annual amount: $371 per adult and child (based on 2024 return)
  • Reduced when income exceeds set thresholds
  • Automatically calculated by CRA — no application needed
  • Paid as part of OTB

Ontario Child Benefit (OCB)

OCB is separate from OTB.

  • Paid with the Canada Child Benefit (CCB)
  • Up to $143.91 per child per month (July 2025 to June 2026)
  • Paid monthly

Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant (OSHPTG)

OSHPTG helps seniors with property taxes.

  • Maximum amount: $500
  • Paid about 4–8 weeks after assessment
  • Not part of monthly OTB payments
