When does the IRS update refund status?

When you file your taxes, the wait for a refund can feel long. Knowing when the IRS updates their system helps you avoid checking the tracker too many times.

The IRS generally updates the “Where’s My Refund?” tool once a day. This update usually happens overnight. Because of this, checking multiple times a day will not show you new information.

When to Start Checking

If you file your return electronically, you can typically see your status within 24 hours. For those who still file paper returns, the wait is longer. You should wait at least four weeks after mailing your return before you check the status.

Daily Update Times

The system updates are mostly done between midnight and 6 a.m. Eastern Time. The tool is often unavailable during these hours for maintenance. Specifically, it is generally down from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. Eastern Time each morning.

Common Refund Timelines

Most taxpayers receive their refunds in less than 21 days when they e-file and use direct deposit. If you choose a paper check, the process can take six weeks or more. For 2026, the IRS is pushing for more direct deposits to speed up this process.

Factors That Cause Delays

Some tax returns take longer to process than others. If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), your refund will be held until mid-February by law. For the 2026 season, these refunds are expected to hit bank accounts by March 2.

Errors on your return or identity verification issues can also cause delays. If the IRS needs more information, they will send you a notice in the mail.

How to Track Your Refund

You can use the official IRS website or the IRS2Go mobile app. You will need your Social Security number, your filing status, and the exact refund amount.
