Social Security Payment Schedule for 2026

Social Security Payment Schedule 2025

For the more than 74 million Americans who rely on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), knowing exactly when your benefits will arrive is the foundation of a solid monthly budget. As we move into the new year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed the Social Security Payment Schedule for 2026, which includes a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to help retirees keep up with inflation.

Whether you are receiving retirement, spousal, survivor, or disability benefits, your payment date is generally determined by your birth date or the specific program you are enrolled in. Here is the complete breakdown of the 2026 calendar.

Standard Social Security Payment Rules

The SSA follows a consistent monthly rhythm for distributing most retirement and survivor benefits. Unless there is a holiday or weekend conflict, payments are issued on Wednesdays based on the day of the month you were born:

  • Birthdays 1st – 10th: Paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
  • Birthdays 11th – 20th: Paid on the third Wednesday of each month.
  • Birthdays 21st – 31st: Paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Exceptions to the Wednesday Rule

  • SSI Recipients: Supplemental Security Income is usually paid on the 1st of the month.
  • Pre-May 1997 Beneficiaries: If you began receiving benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security payment is issued on the 3rd of the month.

Key Schedule Adjustments and Early Payments

When a scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the SSA issues the payment on the preceding business day. This results in several “early” payments throughout 2026, particularly for SSI recipients.

  • January SSI: Issued on Dec. 31, 2026 (due to the Jan. 1 holiday).
  • February SSI: Issued on Jan. 30, 2026 (due to Feb. 1 being a Sunday).
  • March SSI: Issued on Feb. 27, 2026 (due to March 1 being a Sunday).
  • August SSI: Issued on July 31, 2026 (due to Aug. 1 being a Saturday).
  • November SSI: Issued on Oct. 30, 2026 (due to Nov. 1 being a Sunday).
  • January 2027 SSI: Issued on Dec. 31, 2026 (due to the Jan. 1 holiday).

2026 COLA Increase and Average Benefits

Beginning in January 2026, all beneficiaries will see a 2.8% increase in their monthly checks. While this is slightly lower than previous years, it aims to stabilize purchasing power as inflation cools.

As of late 2026, the average monthly Social Security check for retired workers was approximately $2,009.50. With the new COLA, most recipients can expect an increase of roughly $50 to $60 per month, depending on their individual benefit amount.
