January 2026 SSI Payments and the New COLA Increase

VA COLA Increase 2026

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has officially finalized the changes for the upcoming year, bringing a necessary boost to millions of Americans who rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI). As inflation continues to impact the cost of daily essentials, the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) serves as a critical mechanism to ensure that benefits keep pace with the economy.

For 2026, the SSA has confirmed a COLA increase of 2.8%. This adjustment, which was formally announced in October 2026, is designed to protect the purchasing power of approximately 75 million beneficiaries, including retirees, disabled individuals, and SSI recipients.

New SSI Payment Amounts for 2026

The 2.8% increase will result in a noticeable rise in monthly checks. Depending on your filing status, the maximum federal amounts will change as follows:

  • Individual Filers: The maximum monthly payment will increase from $967 to $994.
  • Eligible Couples: For couples where both members are eligible, the maximum benefit will rise from $1,450 to $1,491 per month.
  • Essential Persons: For those who live with and provide essential care to an SSI recipient, the payment will be adjusted up to $498 per month.

It is important to note that these are the maximum federal amounts. Your specific payment may vary based on your personal income, resources, and living arrangements.

Important Change to the January Payment Schedule

While these increases officially belong to the 2026 benefit year, SSI recipients will actually see the extra money before the current year ends. This is due to a scheduling quirk in the federal calendar.

Because January 1, 2026, is a federal holiday (New Year’s Day), the Social Security Administration does not issue payments on that date. When a payment date falls on a holiday or a weekend, the SSA moves the deposit to the earliest preceding business day. Therefore, the payment for January 2026 will be deposited on Wednesday, December 31, 2026.

Recipients should be aware that they will receive two separate deposits during the month of December: the regular December payment at the start of the month and the increased January payment on the final day of the year. Financial experts recommend managing these funds carefully, as the late December deposit must last through the entire month of January until the February payment arrives.

2026 Social Security Payment Dates

While SSI recipients receive their increased funds on December 31, other Social Security beneficiaries (retirees and those on disability) will receive their first 2026 payments throughout January according to their birth dates:

  • Born between the 1st and 10th: Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
  • Born between the 11th and 20th: Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
  • Born between the 21st and 31st: Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

Contact Information and Resources

For individuals who have questions regarding their specific benefit amount or who do not receive their payment on the scheduled date, the Social Security Administration provides several ways to get in touch. It is recommended to wait three business days after the scheduled deposit date before contacting the agency regarding a missing payment.
