New York State has now delivered more than 8.2 million Inflation Refund Checks to residents, according to Governor Kathy Hochul. The state allocated $2.2 billion in the FY 2026 Budget to help residents manage rising living costs, and payments of up to $400 have been mailed over the past two months.
Why the Inflation Refund Checks Matter
The Inflation Refund Check program forms part of the state’s broader effort to ease financial pressure on households. Other measures include middle-income tax reductions, an expanded Child Tax Credit and support for school meals. The goal is to provide immediate relief while offering additional support to families dealing with higher daily expenses.
Eligibility and Payment Amounts
Eligibility for the New York inflation refund is based on 2023 state tax returns. Residents must have filed their 2023 returns and must not be claimed as dependents on another taxpayer’s return. Those who filed late may still receive a payment once their returns are processed.
Payment amounts depend on income:
Calculate Your 2026 COLA Increase →- Single filers earning up to $75,000 in 2023: $200
- Single filers earning more than $75,000 but not more than $150,000: $150
- Joint filers and qualifying surviving spouses earning $150,000 or less: $400
- Joint filers earning more than $150,000 but not more than $300,000: $300
The structure directs the highest support to lower and moderate-income households.
How Many People Have Been Paid?
Every region of New York has received funding, with more than 8.21 million residents receiving over $2 billion across the state.
Breakdown by region:
- New York City: 3,536,000 residents received $828.8 million
- Long Island: 1,251,000 residents received $316.4 million
- Mid-Hudson: 924,000 residents received $234.2 million
- Western New York: 585,000 residents received $152.7 million
- Capital Region: 475,000 residents received $122.8 million
- Southern Tier: 251,000 residents received $66.7 million
- North Country: 156,000 residents received $42.4 million
These numbers confirm that the Inflation Refund Check program has rolled out statewide, with most eligible taxpayers already receiving their payment.
Where Is My Inflation Refund Check?
Residents do not need to apply. Payments are automatically mailed to the address the state has on file. This is typically the address listed on the most recently filed tax return.
The Tax Department clarified that even though eligibility is based on the 2023 return, checks will be mailed to the latest updated address. If you moved and filed your 2026 tax return with your new address, the check will be sent to that updated location.
New York officials have also issued a warning about scams. The state is not contacting residents to ask for information. No application or additional verification is required.
What Officials Are Saying
Governor Kathy Hochul said the statewide rollout shows the program is working exactly as intended: “Over 8.2 million inflation refund checks have now been mailed out, putting money back into the hands of residents. We committed to real relief for New Yorkers, and we will keep looking for more ways to support families dealing with rising costs.”
What to Expect Next
Hochul’s office confirmed that while most checks have been mailed, smaller batches will continue in the coming weeks as more residents become eligible. Once the Tax Department completes processing remaining returns, additional payments will follow.
