Amazon Prime Refund Process: Step-by-Step Guide to Claim Your Refund

ftc amazon prime lawsuit settlement

In 2026, Amazon reached a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after facing allegations that it enrolled customers into Amazon Prime memberships without clear consent and made it unnecessarily difficult to cancel.
As part of this agreement, $1.5 billion will go directly toward customer refunds, while $1 billion covers civil penalties.

If you were charged for a Prime subscription between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2026, you might qualify for a refund. Here’s how the Amazon Prime refund process works, who qualifies, and when payments are expected to be made.

Why Is Amazon Offering Refunds?

The Amazon Prime settlement followed an FTC lawsuit accusing Amazon of using deceptive “dark patterns” — misleading web design tactics that nudged customers into signing up for Prime or discouraged them from canceling.
Although Amazon denied any wrongdoing, it agreed to the payout to resolve the case and update its membership systems. The company has also pledged to make the Prime cancellation process easier and more transparent for users going forward.

How Much Is the Amazon Prime Refund?

Under the settlement, $1.5 billion is reserved for consumer reimbursements. The maximum refund amount is $51 per person, depending on how much a customer paid in Prime subscription fees.
The exact refund amount each eligible member receives will depend on the number of approved claims and the total amount paid during their membership period.

Who Is Eligible for an Amazon Refund?

Eligibility for the Amazon refund process is based on a few key factors:

  • You had an active Amazon Prime account in the United States between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2026.
  • You signed up for Prime through a “challenged enrollment flow”, such as:
    • The universal Prime decision page
    • The shipping selection page
    • Prime Video sign-up pages
    • The single-page checkout flow
  • You attempted to cancel your Prime subscription but were unable to complete the cancellation.
  • You used three or fewer Prime benefits (like Prime Video, Prime Music, or free shipping) during any 12-month period after signing up.

If these conditions apply to you, you will likely receive an automatic refund from Amazon during the first phase of the settlement payout.

How the Amazon Prime Refund Process Works

The Amazon refund process will be handled in two phases to make sure all eligible Prime members are included.

1. Automatic Refunds

The first wave of refunds will be processed automatically.
Customers who enrolled through challenged sign-up pages and used limited Prime benefits won’t need to do anything.
Amazon will verify eligibility and issue refunds of up to $51 by December 25, 2026. The payment will go directly to the account used for the original Prime subscription.

2. Refund Claims

The second phase begins in early 2026.
This phase will cover Prime members who used the service more frequently (up to 10 times per year) or had issues canceling their subscriptions.
These customers will need to submit an Amazon refund claim form once it becomes available on the official settlement site.

Amazon will send email and mail notifications with instructions on how to file. Once notified, eligible customers will have 180 days to submit their claim before the deadline in mid-2026.

How to Check Your Refund Eligibility

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, you can confirm your Amazon Prime membership details by logging in to your account:

  1. Go to Account & Lists.
  2. Select Memberships & Subscriptions.
  3. Click Payment History to view when you joined and your billing records.

If your enrollment or attempted cancellation occurred between June 2019 and June 2026, you likely fall under the Amazon Prime refund program.

How to Claim Your Amazon Refund

If you qualify for an automatic refund, no action is required — Amazon will handle the process for you.
However, if you’re part of the second group, you’ll need to complete a claim form once the site goes live. You’ll be able to access it via FTC.gov/Amazon or directly through the Amazon settlement website.

When completing the claim form, you’ll need to provide:

  • Your Amazon account email
  • Details about your Prime subscription and cancellation attempts
  • The preferred method for receiving your refund

Once approved, your Amazon refund payment will be issued either by direct deposit or by mailed check.

Amazon Refund Timeline

Amazon has outlined the following schedule for issuing refunds under the settlement:

  • By December 25, 2026: Automatic refunds sent to eligible customers
  • Early 2026: Claims process begins for additional refund requests
  • Mid-2026: Deadline to file Amazon refund claim forms
  • After July 2026: Final refund payments sent to claimants

This timeline ensures both automatic and claims-based refunds are distributed fairly and efficiently.

Beware of Amazon Refund Scams

The FTC has warned consumers about scammers impersonating Amazon or government officials to “help” with refund claims.
Remember that the FTC will never contact you about the refund, and you should never pay any fee or share personal details with anyone claiming they can secure your payment faster.

If you receive suspicious emails or phone calls about the settlement, report them immediately at ReportFraud.FTC.gov.
