Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced that eligible Virginia taxpayers could soon see extra money in their pockets, with rebates of up to $400 set to be issued this fall.
Who Qualifies for the Governor Youngkin Tax Rebate?
The Virginia tax rebate 2026 applies to taxpayers who had a tax liability in 2026 and filed their state taxes on time:
- Individual filers may receive up to $200.
- Joint filers may receive up to $400.
To qualify, taxpayers must file their 2026 state taxes by November 3, 2026. Those who requested an extension have until November 1, 2026 to file.
Taxpayers can check eligibility and rebate status starting Thursday, September 25 at tax.virginia.gov/rebate.

According to Governor Youngkin’s office:
- Taxpayers who filed before July 1 will have their rebates sent by October 15, 2026, with most arriving by the end of October.
- Direct deposit recipients will get the rebate sent to the same bank account used for their state refund.
- Others will receive a paper check in the mail.
Rebates and Outstanding Debt
If a taxpayer owes money to Virginia Tax or another state or local agency, the rebate will first go toward that debt. If the debt is smaller than the rebate, the taxpayer will receive the remainder. If the debt exceeds the rebate, Virginia Tax will send a letter explaining how the rebate was applied and provide contact details for the agency owed.
Why Virginia Is Issuing Rebates
Governor Youngkin linked the Virginia taxpayer rebate to the state’s economic growth and surplus revenues.
“Virginia’s strong job growth, bolstered by business investment commitments of $140 billion, has driven a total of $10 billion in surplus revenue and enabled a record $9 billion in tax relief,” Youngkin said. “This fall’s tax rebate reflects a simple truth: it’s your money, not the government’s.”
Virginia Secretary of Finance Stephen Cummings echoed the point, adding:
“As a result of strong fiscal management, Virginia has seen over $10 billion in surplus revenues in the past four years. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that the vast majority of these funds are returned to Virginians while still providing record funding for key priorities.”
Background on Previous Rebates
The Governor Youngkin tax rebate 2026 is not the first of its kind. Similar rebates were distributed for the 2021 and 2022 tax years, arriving in 2022 and 2023.
Budget plans for the current rebates date back to February, when amendments to Virginia’s two-year budget were released by both the House of Delegates and the Senate.
