Tariff Rebate Checks: How Much Could a Family of Four Get if the New Stimulus Proposal Passes?

tariff stimulus check

A new proposal in Washington is raising eyebrows across the country. Senator Josh Hawley, with backing from Donald Trump, has introduced a bill that could deliver direct cash payments to American households.

The plan, called the American Worker Rebate Act, is being compared to past pandemic stimulus checks. Its goal: return part of the revenue collected from tariffs back to the people, especially as families continue to feel the strain of rising costs.

What the Proposal Includes

The bill would establish a direct payment system, with benefits tied to household size and income. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • $600 for each adult and child in a household. For a family of four, that means $2,400 in total.
  • Income limits apply: payments phase out for individuals earning more than $75,000, heads of household earning above $112,500, and married couples with income over $150,000.

In other words, families in the middle-income range would see the biggest benefit if the bill is passed.

Why This Bill Matters

Supporters argue the measure would help working families offset the higher prices caused by tariffs, while also stimulating consumer spending during a period of slower economic growth.

However, critics point to studies from the Congressional Budget Office suggesting tariffs could add $4 trillion to federal revenue over the next decade — but also cost families up to $2,500 a year in higher prices.

Trump’s Take on the Payments

Former President Donald Trump has voiced support for the plan. Speaking to Newsweek, he said:

“We have a lot of money coming in. It’s coming in in enormous numbers. There’s a concept of giving a dividend to the people of this country who have paid a lot of taxes and haven’t received anything in return.”

Trump added that while paying down the national debt remains a priority, there is a strong possibility that some of the revenue will be redirected into “dividends for the people.”
