Ontario residents receiving the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) have just collected their August payment, and the next round is coming soon. The September 2026 Ontario Trillium Benefit payment date is Wednesday, September 10, and thousands of households will see money deposited directly into their accounts.
The OTB combines three tax credits into a single monthly payment:

- Northern Ontario Energy Credit
- Ontario Sales Tax Credit

How Does the Ontario Trillium Benefit Work?
The Ontario Trillium Benefit is indexed to inflation and is income-tested. Your 2026 income tax return determines how much you receive in 2026. The annual benefit is usually divided into 12 equal monthly installments, paid on the 10th of each month.

Who is Eligible for the September 10 Ontario Trillium Benefit?
To receive the September OTB payment, you must qualify for at least one of the following credits:
- Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit
- Northern Ontario Energy Credit
- Ontario Sales Tax Credit
You may be eligible if you:
- Paid property tax or rent for your primary residence in Ontario last year
- Paid energy costs while living on an Ontario reserve
- Paid for nursing home living expenses
- Lived in a designated post-secondary school residence
Eligibility is also based on family net income, age, marital status, and place of residence.
How to Apply for the Ontario Trillium Benefit
There’s no separate application for the OTB. Instead, you must:
- File your income tax and benefit return every year (even with no income)
- Complete and include the ON-BEN application form in your tax package
The CRA reviews your tax return and decides if you qualify for the benefit.

Didn’t Receive Your September OTB Payment?
If your payment doesn’t arrive on September 10, the CRA recommends waiting 10 business days before contacting them. You can check your payment status through your CRA My Account online.
