September 2026 UK Benefits Payment Schedule and Cost of Living Help

UK Benefits Payment

As the school holidays come to an end, some financial pressures on UK families may ease. But for millions, the rising cost of living continues to be a daily struggle. Prices for essentials remain high, while wages have largely stagnated, leaving households under pressure.

Research from the Resolution Foundation shows that the cost of essentials has stayed stubbornly high even after the peak of the cost of living crisis in 2022. At the same time, energy arrears have more than doubled over five years, reaching £3.9 billion at the end of 2026. Meanwhile, The Food Foundation reported that around 7.3 million adults (13.9% of households) experienced food insecurity in January 2026.

Claiming the support you’re entitled to

There are now around 24 million people in the UK claiming some form of DWP-administered benefits – roughly one in three people. Yet research by Policy in Practice shows that £23 billion worth of benefits goes unclaimed each year. You can use their online calculator to check what support you may be entitled to.

  • State Pension: Rose 4.1%, up £472 per year, following the triple lock.

Upcoming changes:
From April 2026, Universal Credit claimants will get an above-inflation increase under Labour’s welfare reforms, with the first rise at least 2.3%. However, the health-related element for new claimants will drop from £105 to £50 per month, frozen until 2029. Applying early may help you secure maximum support.
