Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) 2026: Eligibility, How to Claim and Amount

jobseeker’s allowance

Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) is a payment to help with living costs while you look for a job or try to get more hours in your current role. Here’s how to apply, check eligibility, file a claim, and receive your payments.

How Do I Know If I Can Apply for JSA?

You can apply for JSA if you meet these conditions:

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You are capable of work.
  • You are available for work.
  • You are actively seeking work.
  • You work less than 16 hours per week.
  • You are not in full-time education.
  • You live in the UK.

The Two Types of Jobseeker’s Allowance

When you apply, the Jobcentre will determine which type of JSA you can claim:

Contribution-Based JSA

  • Available if you’ve paid Class 1 National Insurance contributions for most of the past two tax years.
  • Self-employed workers usually cannot claim this.
  • Savings or a partner’s income do not affect payment.
  • Only available for you, not a partner.
  • Can claim for six months, then may switch to income-based JSA.

Income-Based JSA

  • For those who haven’t worked long enough to claim contribution-based JSA.
  • Savings over £6,000 reduce payments; £16,000 or more disqualifies you.
  • Couples can claim together.
  • Can be claimed alongside contribution-based JSA in certain situations (partner claim, disability, or caregiving).

How Much Jobseeker’s Allowance Will I Get?

  • Ages 16–24: £57.90 per week.
  • Ages 25 and over: £73.10 per week.

Part-time earnings or a pension may reduce your allowance.

How Do I Claim Jobseeker’s Allowance?

  • Apply online (preferred).
  • Call 0800 055 6688 if you cannot apply online (Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm).
  • In Northern Ireland, fill in a local claim form at your Jobcentre office.

Jobseeker Interview

During your claim, you will attend an interview where an advisor will:

  • Explain JSA rules.
  • Discuss the types of work you are looking for.
  • Provide information on jobs, training, and opportunities.
  • Check that your form is complete.

Jobseeker’s Agreement

You will sign a Jobseeker’s Agreement (or Claimant Commitment in some areas) that outlines:

  • Hours you are available to work.
  • Type of work you are seeking.
  • Actions you will take to find work.

Failing to meet these obligations may result in benefits being stopped.

How to Check Jobseeker’s Allowance Status

After submitting your claim, you can check your status online or by contacting your Jobcentre. They will inform you of:

  • Claim progress.
  • Upcoming interviews or appointments.
  • Any additional information required to process your claim.

How to Receive Jobseeker’s Allowance Payment

  • First payment usually takes up to two weeks after signing on.
  • You can request a benefit advance if you need money sooner.
  • Sign on every fortnight at the Jobcentre to continue receiving payments.
  • Payments are made within three working days of your visit.

Moving to Universal Credit

  • Income-based JSA is being replaced by Universal Credit over time.
  • Contribution-based JSA remains separate.
  • With Universal Credit, payments are monthly and couples receive one payment per household.

What If I Get a Job?

Always inform your benefits advisor of any changes:

  • Starting a new job.
  • Receiving a pay rise.
  • Moving in with a partner.

Failure to report changes may result in fines or repayment of benefits.
