How to Track Your IRS Stimulus Check or Tax Refund

irs

If you are waiting for your IRS tax refund or stimulus payment, you don’t have to wonder when it will arrive. The IRS provides official tools to track your payments and stay updated. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to Track Your Tax Refund

Use the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” Tool

The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool lets you check your federal tax refund status in real time.

What You Need:

  • Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
  • Filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.)
  • Exact refund amount

Refund Status Stages:

Calculate Your 2026 COLA Increase →
  1. Return Received – The IRS has received your tax return.
  2. Refund Approved – Your refund is approved and being processed.
  3. Refund Sent – Your refund has been sent to your bank or mailed as a check.

Processing Times:

  • E-filed returns: usually updated within 24 hours after IRS acknowledgment
  • Paper returns: updates available after about 4 weeks

Note: The IRS updates this tool once daily, usually overnight. Checking multiple times won’t speed up the process.

Use the IRS2Go Mobile App

You can also track your refund on the IRS2Go mobile app. It works the same way as the website and gives access to other IRS services.

How to Track Your Stimulus Check (Economic Impact Payment)

The IRS has issued all first, second, and third Economic Impact Payments as of 2026. The “Get My Payment” tool is no longer active.

If You Didn’t Receive a Payment:

  • Log in to your IRS online account to see the total amount of payments received
  • You may claim missing payments as a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return

Refund Timing and Common Delays

Typical Refund Timelines:

  • E-filed returns with direct deposit: generally within 21 days
  • Paper returns: can take up to 9 weeks

Common Reasons for Delays:

  • Errors on your tax return
  • Claims for certain credits (Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit)
  • Identity verification or fraud checks
  • Amended or mailed returns
  • Bank processing times

Protecting Your Information

Always use the official IRS website (irs.gov) or the IRS2Go app. Avoid clicking links in emails or messages claiming to provide your refund information. Scammers often use fake websites to steal personal information.
