UCC Sandwich Programmes for Secondary Education

The University of Cape Coast, Ghana offers a number of courses in the five-semester Bachelor of Education sandwich programmes focusing on secondary education. The programme was introduced by the university in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) through the Institute of Education.

This is a 5-semester undergraduate programme in education that focuses on secondary education. The programme intends to enable basic schoolteachers who have the desire to teach in the senior high school, acquire the necessary training that qualifies them the job.

The programme is designed to run for five long vacations with six (6) weeks of engagement during each vacation period.

Courses Under the Secondary Education Programme.

Courses offered by the university in secondary education include Bachelor of Education (Mathematics), Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Education (Arts), Bachelor of Education (Social Studies), Bachelor of Education (Social Science), Bachelor of Education (Home Economics), Bachelor of Education (Management), Bachelor of Education (Accounting) and Bachelor of Education (Information technology).

Requirements for the Secondary Education Programme.

The basic requirements for the programme are Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) and SSSCE or WASSCE. Eligible applicants are to acquire and pass the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) from any accredited institution across the country and beyond. Also, applicant must have credit passes in at least two more selected WASSCE/SSSCE subjects based on the selected course or electives.

Requirements for the Various Courses

1.    Bachelor of Education (Mathematics)

Applicants are to have the Diploma in Basic Education (Science and Mathematics Option) with Credit in Elective Mathematics and any one of following: Chemistry, Physics or Economics in SSSCE/WASSCE.

2.     Bachelor of Education (Science)

Applicants should have Diploma in Basic Education (Science and Mathematics Option) with Credits in any two of the following: Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics and Biology in SSSCE/WASSCE.

3.    Bachelor of Education (Arts)

Applicants should have the Diploma in Basic Education Certificate with Credits in any two of the following. Christian/Islamic Religious Studies, History, Literature in English, French and Ghanaian Language in WASSCE/SSSCE.

4.    Bachelor of Education (Social Sciences)

The applicants must have Diploma in Basic Education certificate with Credits in any two of Economics, Geography and Elective Mathematics in SSSCE/WASSCE.

5.    Bachelor of Education (Social Studies)

Applicants must have the Diploma in Basic Education certificate with Credit in Geography and any one of Economics, History or Government in the SSSCE/WASSCE.

6.    Bachelor of Education (Home Economics)

The applicant should have the Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in any two of the following subjects: Food and Nutrition, Management in living or General Knowledge in Arts, Biology Clothing and Textile and Chemistry in the WASSCE/SSSCE.

7.     Bachelor of Education (Management)

Applicants should have Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in Business Management and any two of Accounting, Economics, Elective Mathematics and Costing in the SSSCE/WASSCE.

8.    Bachelor of Education (Accounting)

Applicants must have Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in Accounting and any two of the following subjects: Business Management, Costing, Economics or Elective Mathematics in SSSCE/WASSCE.

9.    Bachelor of Education (Information Technology)

Applicants seeking admission must have Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in any two of Economics, Business Management, Accounting and Elective Mathematics in the SSSCE/WASSCE.

Note that the UCC Sandwich Programmes for Secondary Education are specifically mounted for basic schoolteachers who desire to teach at the Senior High School level. Hence persons who do not have or passed the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) would not be enrolled.
