Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate gland of men. It occurs when cells form and grow abnormally in the prostate gland. These are also called tumour. But good news is that it is highly treatable when identified early. Therefore, you should seek medical attention once you see any of the signs (symptoms) that are listed below. Below are some of the causes and symptoms of prostate cancers.
Prostate is a small muscular gland located below the bladder and in front of the rectum of men. It is responsible for the production of a fluid known as seminal fluid which helps to transport sperm cells and keep them safe.
Causes of Prostate Cancer
Even though there is no exactly known cause medically proven to be responsible for prostate cancer, there are certain things that one must be on the high alert for when it comes to the causes of prostate cancer. These things may be referred to as risk factors. Below are some of these risk factors and how they put one at risk.
- Old Age – Most cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in men over 50 years of age. Your risk of being diagnosed of this condition increases as you get older.
- Ethnic Group – Studies have shown that prostate cancer is more common in black men than Asian men.
- Family History – If you have a male sibling or father who got diagnosed of prostate cancer before the age of 60, this may increase your risk of developing the condition as well. Also having a close female relative who develops breast cancer may put you at risk of developing prostate cancer.
- Too Much Weight – Men who put on a lot of weight have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer as compared men considered to have a healthy weight. Even though studies doesn’t have a clear result to prove the above, prostate cancer is more aggressive and seems to return after initial treatment in men considered having a higher weight.
- Other things that may put one at risk are too much sex and over masturbating.
Symptoms
At the early stages prostate cancer may not show any signs and symptoms. Hence the best thing to do is to discuss with your doctor and have it checked.
However, prostate cancer that is more advanced may show the following signs and symptoms such as:
- Low force in the stream when urinating.
- Having trouble urinating
- Blood in the urine
- Blood in the semen
- Erectile dysfunction
- Pain in the bones.
It is therefore very important to note that prostate cancer which is detected early enough can be effectively treated. Hence it is advisable to have your prostate checked at least once when you’re getting older or closer to any of the risk factors mentioned above.
